The agenda carried out by the 2017 legislature was one of the most devastating sessions to the average, hardworking, middle class Iowan. It was truly an assault to the Iowans we are proud to help every single day. The legislature did not miss the opportunity to put corporate interests ahead of the rights of hardworking Iowans. From decimating collective bargaining rights, to eliminating minimum wage increases, to gutting the workers’ compensation laws that have been in effect for over 100 years, the 2017 legislature was all too eager to cave to special interests and big business.

You may ask, why did the legislature rewrite the 100 year old workers’ compensation law? It was done because our governor and legislators wanted to meet demands made by big businesses like Tyson and John Deere at the expense of injured workers. If you have ever been injured at work, you know how hard it is to make ends meet. Not only do you deal with the pain and trauma from the physical injury but you also deal with all the anxiety and worry of wondering how will I support my family given I cannot work, and what happens if I cannot return to the work I enjoy and have done all my life?

Legislators answered your concerns by letting you know they do not care and they are not interested in making sure big business treats you, the injured worker, fairly. Instead, our governor and legislators made it clear big business rules and the rights of injured Iowans are not important. Even when faced with actual facts, like the fact the State of Iowa has extremely low litigation rates and low insurance rates, they chose to ignore reality and make it more difficult for injured workers because that is what big business wanted.

The 2017 Iowa Legislature has bragged about having a “historic session” and the “most productive” session ever. If you think it is irresponsible for our lawmakers to brag about this legislative session as “the most productive ever” when it makes the most vulnerable in our state even more so, then contact your legislator.
